Windows XP hack

In Windows XP a performance gain can be achieved by disabling 8.3 name creations in NTFS system because it degrades the drive performance. If you have good reason to keep 8.3 naming convention, for example to use 16bit programs, you needn’t to do this. Otherwise disabling it will increase the performance of the system.

Open the registry editor by going to Start- Run-type ‘regidit’ and push enter. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Filesystem\NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation. Set the value to ‘1’. Exit the registry and re boot the system.
