OLED

OLED technology was invented by Eastman Kodak in the early 1980s. It is beginning to replace LCD technology in handheld devices such as PDAs and cellular phones because the technology is brighter, thinner, faster and lighter than LCDs, use less power, offer higher contrast and are cheaper to manufacture

OLED-organic light emitting diode-is predictably, a light-emitting diode cooked up using organic materials. It is organic composition made it environment friendly, and when built into a display, it shows off crisp picture quality. Moreover, unlike regular LCD displays, an OLED display doesn’t require back lighting, making it extremely energy efficient. OLED displays are also easier to manufacture than LCD or plasma screen.

Unfortunately, the OLED suffers due to its short lifespan. The blue OLED that’s usually used in these displays lasts only about 5000hours is too little to compete with its alternatives. More over, any contact with water destroys these babies, making practical use of a matter of paranoia. Worst of all, deploying OLED display in your product means, that you have to pay Eastman Kodak for a license to the technology-a completely distasteful proportion for manufactures.

So is there no hope of OLED?. It’s been found out that by using phosphorescent materials; the life time of an OLED can be kicked up to 20000 hours, making it a good bit more viable. But ultimately, if Eastman Kodak decides to keep its death-grip on the technology good and strong, manufactures would rather stick to the tried and tested LCD and plasma displays.
